Pet Dental Care

Does your best friend have bad breath? Despite what many pet owners may believe, “dog breath” is not just a nuisance – it’s a sign of an unhealthy mouth. Bad breath is caused by bacteria. Over time, bacteria lead to plaque and tartar buildup on your pet’s teeth. The result is bad breath, reddened gums, and other common signs of dental disease. As dental disease progresses, other signs can include drooling, discomfort while chewing, and loose or missing teeth.

Preventative Dental Care

We are proud that we have the most up-to-date equipment to treat dental disease, including digital dental x-rays. This allows us to detect if there is any disease beneath the gum line that we would not be able to see otherwise. We are often able to see undetected abscesses, broken teeth, resorbed roots, retained roots, and more thanks to dental radiographs.

Comprehensive Oral Health Exam
As part of regular physical examinations, our veterinarians evaluate the teeth and gums and grade them on a scale of 1-4, with 1 being the best and 4 the worst. Dental cleanings are recommended based on these scores. Teeth extractions may be done during the procedure if determined to be necessary by the veterinarian. Dental cleanings are performed under general anesthesia to clean and evaluate all of the teeth properly. Our veterinarians perform extractions and document in the pet’s medical chart if extractions are required. Most dental patients can return home the same day.
Dental Cleaning

English Veterinary Care provides professional teeth cleaning under anesthesia. We measure for dental pockets, clean the teeth using an ultrasonic scaler, polish, and fluoride to treat your pets’ teeth. We also administer antibiotics and pain medications as needed.

Dental Radiology
Most dental disease hides below the gum line and cannot be adequately identified without dental X-rays. Just as in human medicine, we use dental radiographs to identify problems, so that they can be appropriately treated. Without dental radiographs, many painful diseases could be missed.
